Laser periodontal therapy is used to stop the spread of periodontal disease, which is defined as having pockets of 4mm or deeper between the gums and teeth. Periodontal disease, sometimes known as gum disease, causes red, swollen gums that bleed easily; it can also lead to bone loss. Laser therapy works by killing the bacteria that causes periodontal disease. The procedure is used in conjunction with scaling and root planning.
Laser Periodontal Therapy…Helping you maintain your healthy smile!
Bleeding gums… Deep periodontal pockets… Bad breath? Any of these sound familiar to you? The Art of Dentistry is proud to offer the use of an in office laser for our patients, which can help treat all of the above dental problems!
Laser therapy can be used in conjunction with your regular dental hygiene visits to help reduce and eliminate bacteria from your gums and periodontal pockets. Ever notice that your gums bleed and hurt after flossing? Keep this in mind, healthy gums don’t bleed! Bleeding after or during flossing your teeth likely means that your gums are inflamed and you have gingivitis or periodontitis (or both!). Nevertheless, the state of your mouth doesn’t really impact the rest of your body and daily living, right? WRONG!
According to the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, “[Similar to] smoking, elevated cholesterol or obesity, periodontal (gum and bone) disease may be a risk factor for a number of serious health conditions. In recent studies, gum disease has been linked to:
Heart disease and stroke
Pneumonia and other respiratory diseases
Diabetes
Premature, low birth weight deliveries
How is this possible, you may ask? If you have gum disease, the simple act of brushing your teeth or chewing can injure gum tissue, allowing bacteria to enter the bloodstream. It is believed that these bacteria may travel to other parts of the body, potentially worsening or causing other types of health problems”.
